What Are Your Favourite Breakfast Ingredients?

Not sure if you saw the TV program on BBC1 a couple of weeks ago with Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall?
It was an interesting one.
It was another part of his series looking into the nations health particularly around weight loss.
In the episodes Hugh is usually hounding government officials and food manufacturers about one thing or another – brilliant!
In this episode he was going after ‘healthy’ bars.
You know the ones. Always advertised as being full of goodness and great for when you’re on the go.
Admittedly at one point in my life I’ve eaten the bars in question (goodness bars, nature valley, nutrigrain, go ahead) and thought they were pretty good for me and a much better option than a chocolate bar.
It was found that some of the bars had the same/more sugar/fat in them compared to a kitkat and a toffee crisp!
One of my favourite bits was the description of the Kellog’s NutrigrainĀ bars:
‘Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Bars are a delicious mix of your favourite breakfast ingredients all wrapped up in a satisfying bar. A tasty option that will kick start your day keeping you fuelled for the morning ahead.’
Hugh then went on to do a survey asking for people’s favourite ingredients:
Eggs, avocado, bacon, mushrooms, porridge, muesli, fruit, nuts….
It must have surprised Kellogs that no one said:
Strawberry Filling(44%)(Apple Puree, Glucose Syrup, Humectant{Glycerol}, Strawberry Puree{5%}, Acidity Regulator{Citric Acid}, Black Carrot and Grape Concentrates), Cereals(31%)(Wholewheat Flour{16%}, Oatmeal Flour{9%}, Wheat Flour{6%}), Sugar, Invert Sugar Syrup, Vegetable Oils(Palm, Sunflower), Dextrose, Skimmed Milk Powder, Fructose, Salt, Stabilisers(Methyl Cellulose), Raising Agent(Potassium Hydrogen Carbonate), Emulsifier(Soy Lecithin), Calcium Carbonate, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Riboflavin (B2), Thiamin (B1), Folic Acid, Vitamin B12.
How healthy does that sound to you?
This is the processed rubbish we are eating day in day out. Whether it’s in a cleverly disguised breakfast bar or pasta sauces, microwave meals, ice cream, chocolate bar.
So unnatural and in excess so very bad for us.
You don’t need an ingredient list for an egg or an apple.
Stick to wholesome healthy foods and feel much better in the process.
Kick the junk! You need to make the decision yourself, no one is going to do it for you.
